Will AI Replace Restaurant Managers?

Short answer: Restaurant and food service managers have a modest AI exposure. Software is taking on parts of the back office, including staff scheduling, inventory counts and ordering, sales forecasting and labor reports. Most of the job happens on the floor, though: handling a slammed service, coaching staff, fixing a guest's bad night and making sure food is safe and right.

That work is physical, social and in the moment.

AI exposure

Low to Moderate

Scheduling, ordering and reporting are automating; running a dining room and kitchen in real time is not. The band describes tasks, not your career. How we rate exposure.

What AI automates, augments, and leaves alone

Likely automated (AI does this for you)

  • Staff scheduling against forecast demand
  • Inventory counts and reorder suggestions
  • Daily sales, labor and food-cost reports
  • Online reservations and order intake
  • Routine supplier orders

Likely augmented (AI does this with you)

  • Menu pricing and food-cost analysis
  • Demand forecasting for events and seasons
  • Training materials and checklists
  • Responding to online reviews
  • Health and safety recordkeeping

Likely human-anchored

  • Running service in real time
  • Hiring, coaching and keeping staff
  • Handling guest complaints face to face
  • Food quality and safety judgment
  • Setting the culture of a team

AI is tidying up the back office; the restaurant still runs on a manager who can read the room.

Where things stand in 2026

BLS projects food service manager jobs to grow 5.8% from 2025 to 2035. On its new AI exposure scale, which sorts all occupations into four roughly equal groups, food service managers land in the moderate group, the second lowest. Most AI use in restaurants so far is in ordering, scheduling and forecasting tools rather than in the manager's core work of leading people through service.

Where this experience points next

Restaurant leadership skills carry into a few adjacent roles:

  • Multi-unit or area manager: Run several locations, where hiring, coaching and operational judgment scale.
  • Hospitality or catering operations: Apply the same skills to events, hotels or contract food service, often with more predictable hours.
  • Restaurant operations and systems (the remix): Help groups roll out ordering, scheduling and inventory tools, pairing floor credibility with process skills.

What this means for your next move

This is one of the less exposed management roles. Most of the value is in leading people through service, which AI doesn't do. The tools mainly give managers a better view of the numbers.
