Will AI Replace Psychologists?
Short answer: Psychologists carry a heavy documentation load, including session notes, treatment plans, assessment reports and insurance paperwork, and AI scribes and scoring tools are taking a real share of it. Research measures also rate the cognitive and written side of the occupation as highly exposed. The work clients come for is different. Therapy depends on a trusting relationship, and diagnosis and risk assessment carry clinical and legal responsibility.
AI chat tools that offer emotional support exist, but they don't replace licensed treatment, and the occupation is projected to grow.
AI exposure
Low to Moderate
By type of work: High (documentation and test scoring) / Low to Moderate (therapy, diagnosis and risk assessment). Session notes, test scoring and report drafting are highly exposed; therapy, diagnosis and risk judgment are not. The band describes tasks, not your career. How we rate exposure.
What AI automates, augments, and leaves alone
Likely automated (AI does this for you)
- Session notes and progress documentation
- Scoring standardized psychological tests
- Insurance and billing paperwork
- Scheduling and intake forms
- First drafts of assessment reports
Likely augmented (AI does this with you)
- Reviewing histories and records before sessions
- Researching treatment approaches
- Treatment plan drafting
- Tracking client progress over time
- Psychoeducation materials for clients
Likely human-anchored
- Therapy and the therapeutic relationship
- Diagnosis and clinical judgment
- Assessing risk of harm to self or others
- Crisis intervention
- Ethical and legal responsibility for care
AI can take notes in the room; it can't be the person the client trusts with what happens there.
Where things stand in 2026
Clinical and counseling psychologist jobs are projected to grow 11.7% from 2025 to 2035, well above the average for all occupations. BLS's new AI exposure release rates the occupation high, and on the AIOE measure psychologists rank among the top few percent of occupations, mostly because of the cognitive and written parts of the work. BLS is clear that exposure does not imply job loss.
Where this experience points next
Psychologists who want to widen their reach often look at these directions:
- Clinical supervisor or practice owner: Lead other clinicians or run a practice, where clinical judgment and leadership combine.
- Assessment specialist (neuropsychology, forensic, organizational): Focus on high-stakes evaluations that require expert judgment and testimony.
- Digital mental health clinical lead (the remix): Help design and oversee AI-assisted mental health tools so they are safe and clinically sound.
What this means for your next move
The paperwork of psychology is among the most exposed work in healthcare, and the care itself is among the least. Psychologists who use AI to cut documentation time can see more clients or go deeper with the ones they have.
