Will AI Replace QA Testers?

Short answer: Software testing is moving in two directions at once. AI tools now generate test cases, write automated test scripts, run regression suites and draft bug reports. Development teams are also absorbing testing into their own workflow. BLS cites both trends. Testing as a discipline isn't going away, because AI-generated code still needs to be checked, but manual and script-maintenance testing is shrinking.

QA professionals who own test strategy, release readiness and quality for AI-heavy software have the stronger position.

AI exposure

High

Writing and running test cases, regression checks and bug reports are highly automatable; deciding what quality means for a release is not. The band describes tasks, not your career. How we rate exposure.

What AI automates, augments, and leaves alone

Likely automated (AI does this for you)

  • Generating test cases from requirements
  • Writing and updating automated test scripts
  • Running regression suites
  • Drafting bug reports with reproduction steps
  • Test result summaries and dashboards

Likely augmented (AI does this with you)

  • Exploratory testing with AI suggestions
  • Test strategy for new features
  • Performance and load test analysis
  • Usability feedback to developers
  • Prioritizing defects by risk

Likely human-anchored

  • Deciding whether a release is ready
  • Defining quality standards and risk tolerance
  • Exploratory testing that finds the unexpected
  • Advocating for users with product and engineering
  • Accountability for escaped defects

AI can write and run the tests; someone still has to decide what good enough means before a release ships.

Where things stand in 2026

BLS projects software quality assurance analyst and tester jobs to grow 5.7% from 2025 to 2035, but expects growth to be held down as companies fold testing into development and as AI automates some testing tasks. It rates the occupation very high for AI exposure, and on the Eloundou et al. measure testing ranks in the top tenth of occupations.

Where this experience points next

QA people who move up from execution to strategy tend to find these directions fit:

  • QA lead or quality engineering manager: Own test strategy and release decisions across teams, where judgment matters most.
  • Software development in test or developer roles: Move into building the systems you test, a path BLS says the work is already taking.
  • AI model evaluation (the remix): Test AI systems for accuracy, safety and bias, a newer field that rewards a tester's instincts.

What this means for your next move

Manual and scripted testing is shrinking. Quality as a responsibility is not, and AI-generated software arguably needs more of it. Moving toward strategy and AI evaluation keeps you on the growing side.

FAQ

Will AI replace QA testers?

AI is automating test creation and execution, and BLS expects testing to shift into development teams. Test strategy, release decisions and exploratory testing still need QA professionals.

Which QA tasks are most exposed to AI?

Generating test cases, writing test scripts, running regressions, drafting bug reports and summarizing results.

What QA work holds up best?

Release readiness decisions, quality standards, exploratory testing and user advocacy.

What can a QA tester move into next?

QA lead or quality engineering management, development in test, or AI model evaluation.
