Will AI Replace Electricians?

Short answer: Electricians do some of the least AI-exposed work in our 100-role index, and AI is increasing demand for it. The job is physical and skilled: running conduit, pulling wire, connecting panels, diagnosing faults and doing it all safely and to code. AI helps with the office side, such as estimates, material lists, scheduling and code lookups.

Meanwhile BLS expects rising electricity demand, much of it from new data centers, plus grid upgrades, to drive demand for electricians.

AI exposure

Low to Moderate

Estimates, code lookups, scheduling and paperwork are increasingly AI-assisted; installing, testing and repairing electrical systems is not. The band describes tasks, not your career. How we rate exposure.

What AI automates, augments, and leaves alone

Likely automated (AI does this for you)

  • Material lists and takeoffs from plans
  • Scheduling and dispatch
  • Invoices and job paperwork
  • Code and specification lookups
  • Permit application forms

Likely augmented (AI does this with you)

  • Estimating and bidding jobs
  • Load calculations and layout planning
  • Troubleshooting with diagnostic tools
  • Reading and marking up blueprints
  • Training apprentices with reference materials

Likely human-anchored

  • Installing wiring, conduit and equipment
  • Diagnosing and repairing faults on site
  • Working safely around live systems
  • Judgment on code compliance in real conditions
  • Customer and contractor relationships

AI can help price the job and find the code section; the work itself still takes an electrician on a ladder.

Where things stand in 2026

BLS projects electrician jobs to grow 9.2% from 2025 to 2035, well above the average for all occupations. It points to rising electricity demand, mainly from a growing number of data centers, and to the need to upgrade and expand the grid. BLS places electricians in its moderate AI exposure group, in the lower half of all occupations.

Where this experience points next

Electricians who want to grow beyond the tools often look at these paths:

  • Master electrician or electrical contractor: Run jobs or your own business, where estimating, leadership and judgment combine.
  • Data center, solar or grid specialist: Specialize in the areas BLS expects to drive demand.
  • Electrical inspector or estimator (the remix): Apply field knowledge to inspection or preconstruction, with less physical strain.

What this means for your next move

This is one of the least exposed roles in our 100-role index and one where AI itself is creating work. The practical AI change is in estimating and paperwork, not on the job site.

FAQ

Will AI replace electricians?

Not on current evidence. Electrical work is physical and skilled, and BLS projects strong growth, partly from data center and grid demand that AI is creating.

Which electrician tasks are most exposed to AI?

Material lists, scheduling and dispatch, invoices, code lookups and permit forms.

What electrical work holds up best?

Installation, on-site diagnosis and repair, safe work around live systems, code judgment and customer relationships.

What can an electrician move into next?

Master electrician or contractor, data center, solar or grid specialization, or inspection and estimating.
