Will AI Replace Plumbers?

Short answer: Plumbing ranks in the bottom fifth of occupations on both academic AI exposure measures we use, and in the second-lowest of BLS's four AI exposure groups. The work is physical, varied and done in places that are hard to reach: cutting and joining pipe, installing fixtures, finding leaks, clearing lines and working to code in buildings that were never built the same way twice. AI helps a plumbing business with scheduling, quoting, invoicing and looking up code requirements.

It doesn't do the work, and BLS projects steady growth.

AI exposure

Low to Moderate

Estimates, scheduling and code lookups are increasingly assisted; installing, repairing and diagnosing plumbing systems is not. The band describes tasks, not your career. How we rate exposure.

What AI automates, augments, and leaves alone

Likely automated (AI does this for you)

  • Booking service calls
  • Invoices and payment reminders
  • Material lists from plans
  • Code and fixture specification lookups
  • Customer appointment confirmations

Likely augmented (AI does this with you)

  • Quoting and estimating jobs
  • Diagnosing problems with camera and sensor tools
  • Planning pipe layouts from blueprints
  • Permit paperwork
  • Training apprentices

Likely human-anchored

  • Installing and repairing pipe and fixtures
  • Finding leaks and diagnosing problems on site
  • Working in tight, unpredictable spaces
  • Code judgment in real buildings
  • Customer trust in their home

AI can book the appointment and draft the quote; fixing the leak still takes a plumber.

Where things stand in 2026

BLS projects jobs for plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters to grow 6.8% from 2025 to 2035, above the average for all occupations. BLS places the occupation in its moderate AI exposure group, and on the AIOE and Eloundou et al. measures it ranks in the bottom fifth of occupations.

Where this experience points next

Plumbers who want to build on their trade often look at these directions:

  • Master plumber or plumbing contractor: Run jobs or a business, combining trade skill with estimating and leadership.
  • Commercial, medical gas or industrial pipefitting: Specialize in complex systems where expertise commands higher rates.
  • Plumbing inspector or trade instructor (the remix): Use field experience to inspect work or train the next generation, often with less physical strain.
